Tuesday, 2nd April 2024 - 7:30pm

TICKETS: £5 (£3 Regal Film Society members/Students/ES40s, Friends of the Regal £4.50)

Dir Jonathan Glazer          US/UK/Poland 2024              105 mins

Based on the novel by Martin Amis, British director Jonathan Glazer’s multiple award-winning drama about the family life of Auschwitz’s commandant is an unforgettable masterpiece.

The film focuses on the daily detail of the lives of an upwardly mobile Nazi couple Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig and their five children in their idyllic villa in the countryside outside the walls of Auschwitz and, without ever crossing the walls, powerfully evokes the horror within the camp.

The Zone of Interest features outstanding performances from Christian Friedel as Höss and Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) as Hedwig.  Subtitled.

For me, this is not a film about the past.  It’s trying to be about now, and about us and our similarity to the perpetrators, not our similarity to the victims.’  Jonathan Glazer.

There is a war on and most of the country’s able young men have signed up to fight, leaving Ada to recruit her bunch of chorus girls to don their overalls, pick up their hammers and saws and do all the manual work in the theatre as well as flashing their pretty ankles on stage. The last thing they need is some phantom wandering about the wings causing mayhem and making their difficult times even more difficult. Can Doctor Watson and his sidekick Jack Hudson solve the mystery? – Well, they’ve done it before.

MACMILLAN CELEBRATED

The Royal Ballet ENCORE LIVE BROADCAST from The Royal Opera House

PLEASE NOTE START TIME

The Royal Ballet celebrates the breadth of Principal Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan’s one-act ballets.  Danses Concertantes, commissioned by Ninette de Valois in 1955, was MacMillan’s first major work.  An early sign of the incredible artistic output that would follow, the work’s critical success spurred MacMillan to abandon performing in favour of choreography. I t is followed by Different Drummer, MacMillan’s complex and haunting balletic interpretation of Woyzeck, Georg Büchner’s play about a soldier’s descent into madness.  The mixed programme concludes with Requiem, his 1976 work for Stuttgart Ballet, created in memory of its late artistic director, MacMillan’s friend and former Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer John Cranko.

Five Danses Concertantes (Music by Stravinsky) / Different Drummer Music by Webern and Schoenberg) Requiem (Music by Faure).  Choreography: Kenneth MacMillan.

Running time 195 minutes, including two intervals.

JOHN SINGER SARGENT

JOHN SINGER SARGENT

Tuesday, 16th April 2024 - 7:30pm

Exhibition on Screen – JOHN SINGER SARGENT. Directed by David Bickerstaff

 ALL TICKETS £10

John Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era.  What made his ‘swagger’ portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters, what they wore and how they were presented to the audience.  Through interviews with curators, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers, Exhibition on Screen’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art, culture and fashion.

Filmed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Tate Britain, Londonthe exhibition reveals Sargent’s power to express distinctive personalities, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio.

Sargent’s sitters were often wealthy, their clothes costly, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century, but somehow Sargent’s work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke.

Step into the glittering world of fashion, scandal and shameless self-promotion that made John Singer Sargent the painter who defined an era.

Explore the unique creative process of the late 19th century’s favourite portrait artist and the way in which his portraits captured the spirit of a vibrant and rapidly changing age.

SWAN LAKE

The Royal Ballet LIVE from The Royal Opera House

Classical ballet’s most powerful tale of love, treachery and forgiveness returns to the Royal Opera House stage.

Out hunting, Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans.  One among them transforms into the beautiful human Odette and he is immediately enamoured.  But Odette is bound by a spell which keeps her captive as a swan during the day.  Can Siegfried free her?

Tchaikovsky’s sensational score combines with the evocative imagination of choreographer Liam Scarlett and designer John Macfarlane to heighten the dramatic pathos of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s quintessential ballet classic.  Swan Lake remains to this day one of the best-loved works in the classical ballet canon.
