The Pantaloons

“What did thy song bode, lady?
Hark, canst thou hear me? I will play the swan
And die in music…”

It’s stormy outside. In here, tensions are simmering. As a touring swing band gather for their next performance, malevolent trickster Iago begins to sow the seeds of mistrust. The critically-acclaimed Pantaloons relocate Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of jealousy and deception to a jazz-age setting, with live music, intense drama, and more than a hint of their own inimitable brand of theatrical mischief.

Live from the Royal Opera House

DON PASQUALE.  Music by Donizetti

With Bryn Terfel, Olga Peretyatko, Ioan Hotea, Mariusz Kwiecie?

Conductor: Evelino Pido, Director: Damiano Michieletto

Royal Opera favourite Bryn Terfel heads the cast for this new production of Donizetti’s comedy of domestic drama across two generations. The witty story tells of a middle-aged man whose supposed young wife runs rings around him – with her own ulterior romantic purpose in mind.  It has long delighted and surprised audiences, with the sparkle of its music, presented with virtuoso skill by its performers. Damiano Michieletto’s exhilarating production shows how contemporary the characters still are and how immediate and touching the story remains.

Approximate running time: 2 hours 30 minutes.  Sung in Italian with English surtitles
