Maggie Gyllenhaal’s feature debut as writer-director is an impressively atmospheric adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel about a seemingly idyllic Greek beach holiday which takes another turn as the tension gradually builds.
The film stars Olivia Coleman as Leda, a middle-aged university professor on a working holiday in Greece, whose relaxation is disrupted by the arrival of a rowdy American family who bring back painful memories of her troubled past.
The cast also includes Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris and Peter Sarsgaard.
