The Father (Cert 12A)
Dir Florian Zeller UK/France 2021 97 mins
Anthony Hopkins’s Oscar- and BAFTA-winning performance as a man in the grip of dementia powers Florian Zeller’s screen adaptation of his award-winning play The Father. Olivia Colman also won a well-deserved Oscar for her outstanding performance as his daughter Anne.
Anthony (Hopkins) is in his eighties and living alone in his London flat, but he refuses any help from Anne who is trying to organise a carer for him as she is planning to move to Paris.
Hopkins gives a towering performance, moving between righteous outrage and extreme vulnerability as a man desperate to maintain his independence.
The film also stars Mark Gatiss, Olivia Williams and Rufus Sewell.
