Director Whit Stilman Ireland/Netherlands/France/USA 2016 92 mins
A witty, pacy and exquisitely funny adaptation of Jane Austen’s early novella Lady Susan. Set in the 1790s, Whit Stilman’s film is a comedy of matchmaking and heart-breaking which centres on Austen’s most scandalous heroine, the beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon, played by Kate Beckinsale. The deliciously scheming and manipulative Lady Susan arrives at the estate of her parents-in-law to take refuge from the colourful rumours of her dalliances that are circulating through polite society. While she is there she decides to secure a husband for herself and her reluctant daughter. The film also stars Chloë Sevigny and Stephen Fry.
‘What audacity, what elegance! Here is a hilariously self-aware period comedy polished to a brilliant sheen.’ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.
