Dir Stephen Frears UK 2016 110 mins
Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant star in Stephen Frears’s hugely entertaining film about the New York socialite, philanthropist and amateur opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins who was famous for her terrible singing.
Florence Foster Jenkins was an amateur in the original sense of the word: she loved music and singing so much that she threw herself into it, believing that her enthusiasm was enough to overcome any shortcomings in ability. Having built up an affectionate, satirical following over the years, she reached her tone-deaf musical peak in 1944 at a sell-out concert in Carnegie Hall, New York.
Hugh Grant co-stars as Foster Jenkins’s dashing manager and partner St Clair Bayfield, an English Shakespearean actor.
