Barnstormers present OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR

Joan Littlewood and Theatre Workshop’s Musical Entertainment

A history of the First World War, told through songs, images and documents in the form of a seaside pierrot entertainment of the period. Originally devised and presented by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop in 1963, the play highlights the ironies and tragedies of the First World War in stories and songs. Seen from the perspective of the common soldier, songs from the period are interspersed with battle statistics, and news headlines chronicle the manoeuvrings of the European powers.
