John Preston discusses the Jeremy Thorpe affair, the subject of his first non-fiction book A Very English Scandal, which was published to great acclaim in 2016 and later adapted for TV in the BAFTA-winning BBC drama series starring Hugh Grant and Ben Wishaw.

John Preston’s latest book Fall, published last year, tells the story of the rise and fall of the politician and business magnate Robert Maxwell and was shortlisted for the Costa Biography Award.  His novel The Dig, based on the 1939 archaeological excavation at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, has been adapted for the screen in a feature film starring Ralph Fiennes, Carey Mulligan and Lily James.

A very local scandal was triggered in October 1975 when Norman Scott’s dog Rinka was shot dead on Porlock Hill.  It was later revealed that Scott was the former lover of the Liberal Party leader and MP for North Devon Jeremy Thorpe who was charged with conspiracy to murder Scott at Minehead Magistrates’ Court in 1978 and forced to stand trial the Old Bailey the following year.
