From the beginning, The Pirates of Penzance has been one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operas. After its opening in 1879–80 it became part of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company’s touring repertory and was hardly ever again absent through to the company’s closure in 1982.
