Edward and Robert Taylor present EVERGREEN (Director Victor Saville, 1934)

Cinema enthusiasts Robert and Edward Taylor allow us a unique opportunity to view an item from their vast collection of vintage films with a Super 8 copy of Evergreen starring Jessie Matthews. The show also includes a 35mm Gazette report showing the opening of the Regal.

Evergreen was one of the best musicals made in Britain during the 1930s. An escapist fantasy of a young ingenue becoming a star remains one of Matthews’ best and enduringly popular screen appearances, mostly due to Saville’s sensitive but firm direction.Jessie Matthews captured the hearts of the World in her musical comedy performances, on stage, film, radio, and television. She was also the most popular British radio soap star in the 1960’s as Mrs Dale in “Mrs Dale’s Diaries”.
