Macbeth – Icarus Theatre Collective and South Hill Park Arts Centre

Monday, 16th April 2012
7:30 pm

Icarus Theatre Collective and South Hill Park Arts Centre in association with King’s Theatre Portsmouth present MACBETH By William Shakespeare
Directed by Max Lewendel
“Something wicked this way comes…”

Victorious on the battlefield, Macbeth’s nobility and bravery are rewarded by an indebted king. But with each enemy slaughtered to serve Macbeth’s own vaulting ambition, his lust for power takes a deadly turn until he ferociously usurps the kingdom.

The vicious, barbaric undercurrent in Shakespeare’s epic tragedy erupts in this kinetic, blood-thirsty production that goes straight for the jugular. Blending original verse with original music and evocative gothic design, this slick new version is perfect for audiences new to Macbeth and those already well acquainted with Shakespeare’s tragedy.

Icarus Theatre Collective enjoy a reputation for punchy and vibrant productions of contemporary and classic theatre and have been named Time Out’s Critics Choice.

A Comedy By Peter Nichols

In an ageing mock- Tudor house in Bristol in 1979, Maud and her stay- at- home son, Mo, pass their days happily together. He talks to the cat, plays his drums and concocts ridiculous cocktails for them both while she sits chatting away to the people on the telly. No amount of coaxing from Maud’s suave elder son, Hedley, and Mo’s glamorous twin sister, Queenie, will persuade the eccentric pair to lead a more normal life – even the “michael wave” is a gadget too far and part of a world neither wishes to inhabit.
Set when new technology, business morality and social patterns were changing the nation’s behaviour…. master playwright, Peter Nichols (“Privates on Parade” & “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg”), reveals in his hilarious and deeply touching play that change is not always for the best and that ‘opening the cage door does not necessarily imply an escape..’
