The theatre is currently driving forward its plans to develop the front of the theatre. The Regal Theatre’s LIFT OFF project aims to provide the theatre with a modern and attractive entrance vestibule. A new lift giving access to all public parts of the theatre and new amenities will enable all members of our community to enjoy the full range of Regal entertainment and facilities.
MATA has already raised nearly £200k towards the £250k project (as at the end of June 2010) and MATA is appealing to local individuals, businesses and charities to contribute towards the remaining funds needed to complete the project. Plans have been drawn up by local firm Louise Crossman Architects, and planning permission has been granted.
Ray Tew, Chairman of MATA, said: “The Regal Theatre is run totally by volunteers, who diligently sell tickets each day, run the bar, build sets, operate and rig sound and lighting for in-house and visiting companies, look after the needs of our audiences through Front of House staff and generally run and maintain the building without any revenue funding. This means that we have been able to build up funds to put towards the project, and we are thrilled that local support and fund-raising has boosted this to the current levels. We still need to secure further funding however, and are appealing to local people to pledge their support if they can while we pursue other funding opportunities.”
Singer Elkie Brooks, who lives locally, has already given her support to the campaign, when she attended the launch event in Minehead last May. She said she was amazed at the breadth of talent on show – particularly among the younger age groups – and stressed the importance of keeping the Regal going to allow the talent to shine. “I’m just so glad that they’e going to refurbish the Regal” said Ms Brooks. “I did my first show here this year last January and it was marvellous. It was really, really successful; the audience was wonderful.”
